The official QLD Tonga 10’s logo

In an effort to further strengthen the thriving playing talent in the Sunshine State, in 2015 Queensland Tonga Rugby Union will be introducing and hosting the inaugural “Queensland Tonga 10’s” competition.

The competition will act as the official selection trial for the Queensland Tonga men’s and women’s teams who will participate in the Kings and Queens of Pacific Rugby tournament and form the nucleus of teams who will participate in tournaments thereafter.

What is of more importance to the Queensland Tongan community, is that the competition will ultimately see the reactivation of foundation teams like the mighty Alamuhu/West End United team, the physically abrasive Inala Tonga team and the plucky battlers of North Barbarian Tonga team.

Because the competition will take place over one exciting fun filled day, it also allows other Tongan teams from other areas to also attend and participate to stake a claim as to which area truly is the best breeding ground for Queensland Tongan rugby talent.

The State of Origin like competition will see Queensland Tonga tokoua (brother) against tokoua, mate against mate, for a chance at a prized Queensland Tonga jersey.

The competition will make for some mouth watering, explosive possible match ups the community will definitely not not want to miss like Maile Ngauamo (Inala) versus Tonga Ma’afu (North Barbarians) in the hooking department, the battle between monster props Dave Feao (Alamuhu/WE) versus Phillip Ma’u Kite (North Barbarians) or the clash between warhorse Simana Halaifonua (Inala) versus the up and coming Christian Filipine (North Barbarians).

The scary thing is, the previously named match ups are only of players currently in the QTRU system, names like Feleti Kaitu’u, Dylan Sikimeti, Criff Tupou, Kimami Sitauti among a host of others, could also be names who will disperse into teams and add even more talent to an already packed talent pool of players and teams in the competition.

The competition is designed to reactivate the strong local breeding grounds and supporters that make Queensland Tonga what is today and to give players a fair opportunity to show their wares for a chance to represent the Queensland Tonga community thereafter.

More details to follow soon, but get ready, the Queensland Tonga 10’s is going to be epic.
