At Ballymore stadium, the spiritual home of Queensland Rugby Union, the clash between Queensland Tonga and Whenua Ariki Rugby to celebrate Waitangi Day went largely to plan, as the Tongans stumbled their way over the finish line against a determined opposition with National pride on the line.
The path to the 2014 Monimonu Cup began with a sudden death Grand Final qualifying game against the very under rated Melbourne Tonga side. Written off as an AFL State, the Melbourne Tongans main focus was to earn some much over due respect and dispel the AFL myth once and for all for the Victorian Tongan rugby community. Judging from their efforts the Melbourne Tongans well and truly achieved all the goals in those areas.
