Queensland Tonga Rugby Union have named their official squad for 2014. Coach Motekiai Kite has named an extended 24 women squad that will initially compete at the Gold Coast National 7’s tournament a week prior to the KQPR Tournament.
The Gold Coast tournament will include the Manu Sina and Papua New Guinea International teams as well as other recognised prestigious 7’s teams from throughout Australia like the Tribe 7’s team.
Queensland Tonga will enter 2 teams into the Gold Coast tournament which will double as a final trial for who will essentially make the final 15 women squad for the Kings and Queens of Pacific Rugby tournament the week after and then the Monimonu tournament in November.
Coach Kite has named an extended team with a view to the future and to also consolidate a strong core of players to ensure the continual growth of the women’s program this year and for years to come.
The team will be led by recent Tonga 7’s Internationals Vetekina Fangaloka who has been named as captain, and Mele Akuila who has been installed as her official second in command as Vice Captain.
The team has a great blend of youth and experience and will allow the Tongan girls to be competitive as their looming campaigns begin to appear on the horizon.
Congratulations to all the girls on their selection and who have bravely taken up the challenge to represent our community on the rugby field.
